These two articles are about the controversy surrounding Ted Cruz running for president - and whether or not he is eligible because he was born in Canada.

The Constitution says that to run for the presidency, a person must be a natural born citizen - but never defined natural born. The law is ambiguous - Cruz's defenders say that he is a natural-born citizen because his mother was a U.S. citizen, but his critics say that a natural-born citizen is one who is born within the territory of the United States.

This question of the eligibility of the president is relevant to our unit because the requirements are outlined in the Constitution, and this has been debated before, with people like Senator John McCain, who was born in Panama, but on a U.S. military base, and Obama - who knows why his citizenship was debated, he was born in Hawaii. Eligibility is linked with credibility in the minds of many Americans, so it is important for a candidate to be eligible and not stray from the Constitution.

Recently, President Obama and the White House administration has proposed for a 1 billion dollar plan in funding to cancer research and advancements in science. The money will go towards to inventing vaccines, cancer detections, analyzing tumor makeups, and cancer research in children. He will create a group called the White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force, putting Biden in charge of the task force. Obama plans to ask Congress for $755 million in his 2017 budget next week.
A lot of themes and vocabulary studied in this class can be applied to this article. For example, Obama proposed this in his State of the Union address, which gives Congress a hint as to what to make legislation on. A theme of checks and balances is the executive branch proposing legislation to Congress, but the legislative branch must make the actual law and pass it. Congress has the power of the purse, so they can manipulate the amount of funding for the cancer research plan.

On monday President Obama announced a ban on solitary confinement for juvenile inmates in the federal prison system, citing that the practice is way overused and could lead to devastating psychological consequences for the young teens. He commanded the Bureau of Prisons to eliminate the harsh punishment of confinement and said for a serious offense, a maximum of 60 days, not 365 days. He explains how this does nothing to make our community safer and more whole. He speaks of the tragedy of Kalief Browder who was 16 when put into confinement without any human contact for two years just for stealing a backpack. From this, when he was free, he killed himself. With this new policy in place, Obama has left agency officials to make specific guidelines but in the end, 50 new reforms are in place that all correctional facilities must follow. “How can we subject prisoners to unnecessary solitary confinement, knowing its effects, and then expect them to return to our communities as whole people?” - President Obama
This topic follows the checks and balances of each house has on one another. For Obama to implement the policy on the Bureau of Prisons, he must have taken executive orders for it to pass/ be implemented. This then integrates to the unit we are learning now, the Bureaucracy. The federal prison system has been trying to end solidarity on juveniles but has not fully implemented this. With this policy, the wellbeings and mentality of juveniles will hopefully be restored. Just last year President Obama was the first president to visit a federal prison as he wanted to meet the inmates and see how the prison system is. President Obama has been big on giving inmates and people second chances.

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/25/politics/obama-bans-juvenile-solitary-confinement/index.html

On Monday, President Obama said that he was moving to ban solitary confinement for juveniles and lower-level criminal offenders. Obama’s decision is only his most recent in a line of reforms which he has instituted towards the criminal justice system and, more specifically, the prison system of our country. Obama said that this decision is prompted by a Justice Department review which opined that solitary confinement made it much more difficult to rehabilitate prisoners and reintroduce them to society. Solitary confinement, Obama said, “[should] be limited, applied with constraints and used only as a measure of last resort.”

As noted above, this action is the latest in Obama’s reformation of the prison system which has occupied much of Obama’s time during his final year in office. According to the CNN article linked to above, Obama’s vows to focus on the criminal justice system have lead him to being the only sitting president to visit a federal prison. He has also vowed to address issues such as prison rape and the problems of trying to successfully (and safely) reintroduce recently-released prisoners. It is clear that Obama’s decision to fight for the rights and civil liberties of prisoners that Obama is trying to make the most of his final year in office and abandon his “lame duck” image. By continuing to address these key problems, he is remaining a memorable figure in politics – especially in a time when presidential candidates are the center of politics.

  5. Obama has re-implemented an illegal immigration policy that was in place during Bush’s presidency. It is known as the “catch-and-release” policy. Before this policy was reinstated, new illegal immigrants that were caught, were arrested by Border Patrol. The immigrants were responsible for attending a court hearing and were subject to removal proceedings. A problem with this was that the majority did not attend their court hearings. Now that the policy has changed, Border Patrol is not allowed to arrest illegal immigrants as long as they claim to have lived in the United States for two years. Border Patrol must release immigrants, without arrest, as long as they do not have criminal records. Border Patrol is supposed to prioritize arrests based on the severity of criminal records. Migrants have learned that if they say they have been in the U.S. for two years, they can avoid being arrested. Overall, there are many loopholes in this new policy. Because of this, Border Patrol and the Center for Immigration Studies expect that there will be a record number of illegal immigrants coming into the United States in 2016.
This is related to the Presidency unit because presidential powers play a large role in this policy. The president wanted to pass new laws regarding immigration, but could not without Congress’s approval. With the Department of Homeland Security, Obama was able to create a new policy, but not a national law. This has to do with formal powers of the president alone versus the formal powers that the President has with Congress.

    http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/02/03/obama-visits-mosque-islam-has-always-been-part-of-america/

The infamous tragedy known as 9/11 sent the United States into a state of caution and uncertainty. When Bush was in office, he had to face an issue where Muslim Americans were being targeted and blamed by the public. Bush took action by addressing the public and assuring the public that the actions taken by the terrorists were in violation of the Koran. Obama is now taking a similar approach to settle to recent problems of the public targeting the Muslim community once again. However, instead of simply talking, Obama is taking the time to visit a mosque, for the first time in his presidency, in order to speak to the public.
This relates to our unit of the presidency because we see the president addressing the nation about a current issue. This is similar to a State of the Union that the president gives a joint session to the US Congress. The role of the president is to address the nation when there are times of conflict. This creates a stronger presidency and a stronger nation.

In the beginning of January 2016, President Obama declared and executive order for tighter firearm restrictions. Obama grew emotional as he made his passionate call for a national “sense of urgency” to limit gun violence. The White House is seeking to expand background checks for buyers. Critics say that strengthening background checks for purchasing guns would not make it harder for criminals to obtain firearms, but Obama stands his ground, “I reject that way of thinking” says Obama. Obama says he is not trying to take away everyone’s guns, he is just trying to put a stop to gun massacres. For example, Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. Obama also states that he is not going against the Second Amendment for one’s right to bear arms, he believes that he can find a way to reduce gun violence consistent with the Second Amendment.
This is related to the Presidency unit because we talked about the powers of the president and one of them was an executive order, a more common one, which Obama just declared. We learned that the President will normally declare an executive order when he can’t get Congress to agree with a law/bill he wants passed, so a way around Congress’ approval is an executive order. Also, the President can’t go against the Constitution, so this is a good example of how the President had to work with the Amendments when developing a bill/law. Obama is not going against the Constitution, but critics are trying to say he is. This executive order is a good example of some of the powers of the President that we learned in the unit.

Within the last month the House of Representatives have repealed Obama Care or at least of portion of the bill. Obama was not very happy with this repeal of his proposed legislation, and he stated that without this bill, the country could possibly go "backwards," and that is not what he wants to happen. He announced that he was going to veto the repeal and did so just after that. However the legislative branch does want to fund a program that they don't think is working particularly well.
This relates to what we have talked about in class because it involves checks and balances which we all know is that no one branch can have full power or authority over the other branches. The legislative branch is using its power to try and remove something that they don't like from the president while Obama is using his power to veto the repeal. This topic relates to the presidency because Obama is fighting this battle between branches were as congress has over 400 people all trying to eradicate this new bill and pass their own.

On February 4th, President Obama invited the 2015 NBA Championship winning Golden State Warriors to the White House. The President recognized the Warriors with having a "nuclear lineup" referring to their incredible shooting and passing; and he cracked some jokes on the Warriors players as well. Obama told the Warriors to not forget about the work ethic they contained in order to achieve their championship.

Pertaining to the Golden State Warriors, it is a tradition that the team in a professional sport, such as Hockey, Football, Baseball and Basketball, who wins the championship is notified by the President to come to the White House so he can share the glory with those particular players.
The President does these types of events in the White House to improve his popularity and likeability, and to add some glamour to his extremely difficult job; being invited to the White House is an honor. President Obama, as the Head of Government, tries to use his Bully Pulpit in order for people to remain trust and appreciation towards him. He tries to show the greatest amount of appreciation for the athletes, and that helps him connect with the American people because sports are very popular in this world. Connecting with what Americans show a lot of value in helps increase the approval ratings for the President.

As the presidency of Barack Obama comes to a close, candidates try to persuade voters in voting for them in order to secure the presidential spot, but two front runners in Cruz and Clinton have come under scrutiny in the way they will be able to lead the country. Cruz's eligibility to become president to has caused his ability in leadership to falter because people might not want to vote for a person is not born in the United States. Clinton on the other hand has struggled to win the support of the younger generation of females which has caused some questions in her ability to lead the nation as a whole because most of her campaign is centered around women's rights.

These articles relate to the unit of presidency because these candidates show that qualities that are needed in order to be the president of the United States. These qualities come with the job of the head of state. The fact that these candidates cannot win the hearts of the people are their target audience calls into their question to lead the country and follow in the footsteps of previous presidents.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2000

Many are excited for voting for president, you get to have a say in the way that your country is run; but what people are finding out about the way elections are is beginning to diminish their enthusiasm. Most people know about the electoral college, but not exactly how it works. After the votes in each of the 48 states that have electoral votes are counted and tallied, the political party whose candidate received a majority in a particular state is allowed to choose a slate of electors who will cast the real votes for President. All 538 electors meet at a designated location within their respective state in December to cast an official ballot. The candidate who receives a majority of the electoral votes (currently 270) wins the election.

There are several problems with the way the electoral college is run. First of all, the distribution of electoral votes per state is not properly dispersed. Essentially your vote will carry more or less weight depending on what state you live in. Another oddity is that a person can become president by only winning 21.8% of the popular vote. We need ask ourselves if this system is worth keeping if someone can become president while only ¼ of the country wanted them top lead us?

    http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/09/politics/obama-cyber-security-plan/

Obama has signed an executive order dealing with cyber security. Recently, there has been some high profile hacking of the government and people are pretty concerned about it. The Social Security Administration is secured by a 1960s programming language, COBOL. In the executive order, Obama wants to establish the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity. Obama also wants to add $3.1 billion dollars to Information Technology Modernization Fund. That $3.1 billion is part of the $19 billion dollars Obama included in his 2017 budget plan for updating and advancing cybersecurity. Obama also created a Federal Privacy Council made up chief privacy officers from 25 different federal agencies.

Obama is using his Informal powers of executive orders to step up national data security. Most of the things he is doing is allowed to be in an executive order, but somethings will require Congress to sign and approve on things. Some of the Congress approved things are the future budget and how that money would be distributed.

This article discusses Obama’s final State of the Union address, which was used to summarize and reflect on his entire presidency. Obama was not hesitant to discuss the shortcomings of his term, and take the blame for them, including the further division between the two parties. He went on to speak about the Republican’s views on the state of the nation, as well as the candidates for the upcoming election. The president directly criticized Donald Trump, saying that it is not alright for Americans to see all Muslims as the enemy. He also indirectly attacked Ted Cruz by discussing republican’s persistent urging for Obama to “carpet bomb” Islamic nations. His speech featured an array of symbols, including Syrian refugee guests and an empty seat next to Michelle Obama to represent victims of gun violence. This was one of the president’s last chances to give a major speech, as everyone is shifting their attention to the presidential race.
This directly relates to the presidency unit in our class, as the State of the Union address is a power held by the president. It is a minor part of checks and balances, as it gives the president the opportunity to tell the legislative branch what bills or actions he wishes to see completed in the upcoming year. Obama’s speech was not a traditional State of the Union address in that he did not focus on outlining the legislative policies, but rather discussed the positive and negatives of his presidency. The major flaw in his term was the obvious gridlock that prevented the progression of new legislation, another problem we learned in our Legislation unit, and Obama was not afraid to acknowledge that he was at least partly responsible for not better handling the standstill. The bully pulpit is also apparent in this speech, as his condemnation of several candidates in the current presidential election is certainly going to influence at least some voter’s opinions.

In President Obama’s new proposed budget to congress starting on October 1, 2016, NASA would receive 19 billion dollars. This number is slightly down from the 19.3 billion dollars that NASA received in the last budget. The cut comes as a result of Obama proposal to cut 840 million dollars from NASA’s deep space exploration program. Obama has also proposed to cut 100 million dollars from planetary science. These two proposals have created much criticism from the Republican and chairman of the House of Sciences, Lamar Smith. "This is not the proposal of an administration that is serious about maintaining America’s leadership in space,” said Smith. Obama’s proposal is expected to not go over well in congress. In the past, congress has not liked the Obama administration's tendency to cut funding for space exploration. NASA’s strategy for its “Journey to Mars” is a return to the lunar surface, but Obama has prohibited astronauts from going onto the moon.
This relates to the presidency unit when we talked about the executive powers of the president, and also checks and balances. Obama has the executive authority to propose this new budget to congress. Congress has the option to not pass the budget. These two things are examples of executive authority and checks and balances. Obama has the authority to propose any budget he wants to, but has to make it reasonable so that congress passes the budget.

Obama has been recently urging American citizens to end their prejudice against Muslims in the United States. He states that an attack on one faith is an attack on all faiths. He doesn’t want the muslim race to be defined by the awful actions of extremists such as ISIS or other terrorist groups. He went on a tour of a mosque in Baltimore recently, which was getting many terrorist threats in the earlier weeks due to the religion. Obama will meet with the Italian President Sergio Mattarella in order to discuss the fight of the spread of the Islamic state in Libya. They both agreed that after meeting with the Libyan government, they will help them build up their security capacity in order to push back ISIL. They will both need to be aggressive with their attacks and plans in order to hold off the strong Islamic State and to help manage the flow of fleeing refugees.
This is related to the presidency unit because Obama is using his presidential powers in order to alert the nation of bigger issues going on in the world. He uses the bully pulpit in order to speak out and tell America that the racial prejudice needs to end because we need to go help fight against the extremists, who are the bigger problem to begin with. He is expanding his influences to other countries and is meeting with their leaders in order to join forces and fight against what he thinks is right.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2016/02/09/republicans-shouldnt-ignore-the-presidents-budget/

President Obama's budget proposal of $4.1 trillion was disrespectfully ignored by the Republican budget committees of the House and Senate. With this topic comes much controversy, because since the 1970s it has been customary of the Office of Management and Budget Director to present the president's entire budget in a hearing before Congress. Last week, the chairmen of the House and Senate budget committees released a joint statement saying that this year, that would not be the case. Their reasoning denied the possibility of this budget working, and they predicted that it would double the failure that we have previously undergone financially. House Budget Committee Ranking Member Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said he was "appalled" by the decision and that, "This choice is more than just a rejection of the House Budget Committee's longstanding, bipartisan tradition; it is disrespectful to the Committee members, the public and the president."
The conflict between the democratic and republican parties is growing and questioning the right of Obama's budget to be heard before Congress. A proposal like this has never been denied, afterall, and now that it has, ideas and people are being verbally criticized and attacked.

    http://time.com/4202049/donald-trump-ted-cruz-not-allowed-to-run/

There has been some debate over the eligibility over Ted Cruz and whether he is allowed to run for president. In the Constitution, it states that anyone who runs for president must be a natural-born citizen; therefore, he must be born on U.S. soil or a U.S. military base. Ted Cruz, however, was born in Canada, but he was naturalized at birth due to his mother being an American citizen. His unique situation brings into question what exactly was meant by "natural-born" in the Constitution.
This relates to the presidency unit because it brings into question the Constitution and what exactly the founding fathers meant when these requirements were outlined. These requirements have been debated numerous times in the past years; for example, Alena Mulhern, a young girl from Kingston, is petitioning for the right to run for president even though she was born and adopted from China as an infant. The topic of Ted Cruz's eligibility brings into debate the requirements of the presidency defined by the Constitution, and if we have the right to to apply our own definitions.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-supreme-court-obama-climate-change-plan-20160209-story.html

In recent awake of the climate change meeting held in Paris in December, President Obama has created a bill that would limit carbon dioxide emissions by 1/3 by 2030. The bill was put up for question because the states felt that the government was stepping over its boundaries. Their reasoning was that many states are reliant on coal, oil and fossil fuels which produce the CO2 emission; therefore to get reduce the CO2 electric companies would have to pay billions to find a better energy source. The EPA fought back saying that the states have six years to figure out their plans.(So they have more than enough time) The case has been put on hold and most likely won't be decided when Obama is still in office, and until then nothing concerning the bill would be put into action.

This relates to the presidency because as Obama's last year in office he wants to make himself a legacy. Along with the climate change bill he also has the immigration bill that has yet to be decided. Therefore by using his bully pulpit he is bring attention to climate change and the effects of it unless we do something about it now. If we do things later in the future it might be too late, so by proposing the bill early to plan for something that is coming in less than 10 years will not only benefit the planet but the things that live on it as well. Also by proposing the bill even if the exact one isn't passed then at least something concerning it will be passed. Obama must have realized then doing something is better than doing nothing; so even if the exact words he wanted isn't what is agreed upon at least there is some hope of just fixing it a little so that something is changed. (Being the growing numbers of CO2 in the atmosphere)

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell recently announced a new authorization for the use of military force, or AUMF, that would give the president new authority to take action against the Islamic group ISIS or ISIL. It wouldn’t put any restrictions on the duration, geography, or use of U.S ground combat troops in the war. It will also keep intact a broad AUMF from 2001 that never expired and allows the president to take military action against anyone connected to the terrorists behind the 9/11 attacks. In other words, the president will have almost unlimited war powers.
This issue relates to the theme of checks and balances because, even though the President will be given more power, he still needs Congress to declare war on ISIS or ISIL before he is able to exercise these new powers. Another theme is executive authority, if Congress weren’t to approve declaring war on ISIS or ISIL, then the president could use his powers from the War Powers Resolution of 1973 to bypass Congress’s approval while still being allowed to use his new powers.

Obama has proposed a budget of $4 trillion to congress. The policies aren't just for the 2017 fiscal year, but for the nation's future. He’s hoping that this will reduce the deficit by $2.9 billion over the next 10 years. He is trying to tackle poverty and clean water while also increasing the spending to fight the Islamic State, $11 billion would be spent on this, while $19 billion would be spent towards cyber security threats. $157 billion would be put to research that expands from cancer research all the way to water infrastructure. However many are saying there is bound to be little influence on Capitol Hill. This is a lame duck president’s proposal being sent to a hostile congress of an opposition party.

This relates to what we're learning because of the vocab used. For instance “lame duck president” which means it’s a president just sitting in office waiting for their term to be over because they can no longer run. This reflects the themes of what we are learning because it shows the powers of the president are limited. They can propose all the bills they want but it doesn't necessarily mean they are going to be looked at or acknowledged.

The first bill is going to bring Social Security up to date and make it so they can fix computer mainframes and software to work faster and better. Then for this obama created two new entities tuesday: the first, a Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity. The second bill is to make it so the 25 federal agencies coordinate efforts to secure data.
This corresponds with our unit because it refers to the powers of the president and the executive orders. Its talks about the ability to the congress to using and creating bills and if he's overstepping his bounds. Finally it refers to the bureaucracy and how he's creating 2 new goverment agencies and how he's trying to get them to work more efficiently and upgrade their equipment.

President Obama supplied the ninth veto of his Presidency by denying a Congressional resolution that would have overturned federal regulations on clean water. Adopted by the Obama administration in 2014, The Water Of The United States Rule expanded the definition of waters subject to the jurisdiction of the U.S environmental Protection Agencyclopedia under the Clean Water Act. Obama stated in the veto message that too many of our waters have been left defenseless and all of the pollution ends up in rivers and lakes near where most Americans live; which is a problem because people depend on clean drinking water, recreation and economic development. Congressional Republicans tried to overturn the veto by using the Congressional Review Act in order to have authority to regulate what is done on private land, but they were short of the 2/3 vote.

Under Article 1, section 7 in the Constitution, the President has the authority to veto legislation in Congress; which is one of the President's most lethal weapons in preventing the passage of Legislation. There are two types of vetoes the President can use; the Regular veto or the Pocket veto, and they are both very affective. The President uses his veto powers faithfully to prevent further issues.

  23. Evan Delp - AP Exam Review Blog Post #2 (Presidency)

    http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/17/us/politics/senator-charles-grassley-hearings-supreme-court-nominee.html

This article addresses some of the controversy around appointing the successor of Antonin Scalia, who recently passed away. Considering that Obama is in the final year of his second term, many believe that the new Supreme Court justice should be nominated by the new president when he/she assumes office next year. The nomination and approval of new justices is a very significant event because they serve for life. Potentially, this appointment could affect the judicial branch for the next 30+ years. Following the death of Justice Scalia, the court now has four Democratic justices, and four Republican justices. This makes the upcoming appointment even more important because it has the potential to sway the Supreme Court to a liberal majority.

This controversy relates to our current discussions in class because it deals with the Constitutional powers of the President, specifically the ability to nominate Supreme Court justices. Another common theme is the power of the legislative branch, in this case, the Senate’s power to confirm Supreme Court nominations.

Recently many people have decided that the most qualified candidate for the US presidency would be Watson, a supercomputer developed by IBM. There has been a Watson 2016 campaign created as a result. The famed Jeopardy! champion is considered by its supporters to be completely representative of the nation because it draws its answers from the internet; it gives the most common or average of what it finds. IBM has declared that Watson will not be running in the 2016 race, but current presidential candidate Zoltan Istvan believes that by 2028 supercomputers will be “smart” enough to be viable for any position. There is a real debate now whether an AI system can legally be an elected official, especially one as esteemed as the president.
Watson technically meets some of the requirements of presidency and will meet them all eventually. Watson was created in the United States, so was “born” here, although not a citizen. It must be decided whether a computer can become a citizen for this campaign to be viable. Watson is currently neither old enough nor a resident for long enough, but those will come with time. A future SCOTUS case may determine when AI becomes “conscious” and an actual being, so therefore would be able to be a citizen (this is not a real case, purely hypothetical).

Recently the supreme court judge Antonin Scalia, passed away. It is now, once again, time for the president to begin the process of choosing a replacement. However as usual when Obama gets to make such an important decision like this, Republicans aren't happy. Despite the fact that the constitution dictates that the president must choose a successor, the republican controlled senate will be pulling out all the stops in order to prevent Obama from electing another democratic justice who shares his views.

Personally I find it ironic that Scalia was known for following the constitution of the united states exactly as it was written and now the his political allies are now trying to go against that very document. In the end it will just be another example of gridlock

  26. On February 9th president barack obama signed two executive orders that increased funding for cyber security for 2017 and creating two new bureaucracies, they are the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity, and Federal Privacy Council. The Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity, will be made up of leaders areas like technology, national security and law enforcement. They will recommend ways to strengthen online security in the public and private sectors. The Federal Privacy Council will bring together chief privacy officers from 25 federal agencies to coordinate ways to protect the information the government keeps on US Citizens.
These executive orders can be seen as a way for a lame duck president to get his policies going without going through the needless bickering and gridlock that congress provides; however, some parts of his full plan have to go through congress.
